Horse - watercolour

Watercolour horses are the order of the day!

Magnesium Brown, Venetian Red, Ultramarine Violet, Cobalt Turquoise, Yellow Ochre and Indigo were used here with a lots of water.

I wanted to get a feeling of great energy even though the horse is still. I worked very wet into wet therefore and began with a limited sketch. I like to allow the paint to find it's path - with a little coaxing from time to time.

Finishing Post - watercolour

Hill and Hill Gallery, Fletching requested a painting of horses, so I decided to re-work some sketches that I had used last year for an acrylic. I wanted to maintain the freedom of scale, so used a full sheet of 300lb rough. I was keen to explore the feeling of movement using wet into wet watercolour with lots and lots of water.

The palette overall is quite limited, using a new favourite - W&N Magnesium Brown. I love it's opacity which holds up well against the transparent pigments; indigo, French ultramarine and ultramarine violet. I carry the colour through the painting to encourage the sense of movement, leading the viewers eye across the surface of the work.

I used a tiny bit of masking fluid to maintain a highlight on the bit, tail and noseband.

I just need to bring out the bridle when it's dry and I think a trip to Uckfield Framing Company will be in order!

Reindeer

This year's Christmas card design completed for Horlock Holdcroft Financial Consultants Ltd.

I took inspiration from drawing the reindeer at the Ashdown Forest Llama Farm on the A22. Jodie, one of Horlock Holdcroft's Administrator's is a fan of them too, so I decided to base the company Christmas card on my sketches.

The painting was worked in watercolour, maintaining solid drawing around the faces and antlers to hold the composition together. Otherwise, as usual I let the paint flow giving the animals a sense of movement. I used a limited palette, mailnly comprising burnt umber, French ultramarine, ultramarine violet, cerulean blue (I love it's opacity) and burnt sienna.

The Griffin Inn, Fletching (pen and wash) 76 x 56cm

To complement the bonfire painting now hanging in the window of Hill & Hill Gallery, I have just completed this view of the Griffin Inn. I really love this way of working as I ink in the drawing first and can them be more loose with watercolour later.
